People are not the problem…

“When a flower doesn’t bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.”

–  Alexander Den Heijer, author

Here’s an “odea”* -

If a person or team is underperforming, look first at their context (environment) to reveal a policy, process, or practice that is unhelpful and constraining.

* An idea for organization development.

And here’s an idea for you more personally:

If you desire to make a change personally - perhaps adjust a routine, start or stop a habit - look to make a change to your environment to influence you to follow through on your desire. For example, if you want to read more, you might consider:

  • Broadcasting your desire to your family and friends (you will be motivated to “practice what you preach”)

  • Setting a reminder on your phone to nudge you to read at a specific time every day

  • Enroll a friend in a friendly accountability challenge - you’ll keep to your intention to read more, they make a commitment of their own that they intend to keep, and you each chat each week to see how it’s going…

Leverage your environment to help you successfully change!
